I took my 5- and 7-year-old children to enjoy canoeing and sightseeing on Yubu Island. We had originally planned to go canoeing and snorkeling, but the snorkeling was canceled, so they suggested a plan that included sightseeing on Yubu Island and canoeing instead. The kids paddled hard and really enjoyed the canoeing. As we paddled deeper into the mangrove jungle, we encountered pristine forests, waterfalls, and rivers that made us feel as if we’d slipped back in time to ancient times. The kids were thrilled to spot various creatures along the way. On Yubu Island, we had the rare opportunity to ride a water buffalo cart across the sea and even feed the animals; each water buffalo had its own distinct personality and was absolutely adorable. Our guide, Shotaro, was very friendly and fun to be around. He shared not only his knowledge about mangroves and the wildlife living on Iriomote Island but also many other interesting stories. Also, during the canoe trip and the jungle exploration, he repeatedly reassured us—since we had children with us—that it was okay to take our time, ensuring we could enjoy the experience safely. We could really feel how much Shōtarō wanted us to have a good time. I don’t know when we’ll be able to come back, but if Shōtarō is there when we do, I’d definitely like to ask him to be our guide again.

In conclusion, it was absolutely amazing. Even for someone in their mid-30s who doesn’t usually exercise—and even for a complete beginner at snorkeling and other ocean activities—this was a tour I could enjoy with complete peace of mind! (It seemed fine even for people who aren’t strong swimmers.) Taking photos on Baras Island, one of only two islands in the world made entirely of coral, was a truly special experience. Snorkeling was easier than I expected. I was a little nervous about the ocean at first, but I got over it. Seeing the fish swimming right there in the same water was a wonderful experience—far different from seeing them at an aquarium. Canoeing was more enjoyable than I thought, and didn’t require as much physical effort as I’d imagined! We were able to explore the mangroves quite deep into the forest, making for a truly special time. Since the mangroves are completely untouched by human hands, they embody true natural beauty. They’re simply breathtaking. The guide staff were knowledgeable about the flora and fauna, and their explanations were very easy to understand (thank you, Shotaro-san!!).

It was my first time canoeing, but I had a blast! 😊
I got to enjoy so many of Iriomote Island’s attractions that are only visible at low tide!

Our guide, Sho-chan, was a great storyteller—it was a pleasure to listen to him—and he really knew how to get everyone excited, so I think our whole group had a great time doing the activities!!
