I went on the Jungle Night Tour guided by Matt-chan and the Sunrise Canoe Tour guided by Ruri-chan. It rained quite a bit on the jungle tour day, but as long as you wear rain gear, a mountain parka, or other clothes you don’t mind getting wet, you can still have a great time. We spotted all kinds of plants and animals, and the guide told us the names and characteristics of everything the participants found, so it was a lot of fun. Strolling along the sandy beach at night was also a rare experience, and I’m glad I took part. If I ever come back, I’d like to try these tours during a different season or on a sunny day. On the canoeing day, it was cloudy and we couldn’t see the sunrise, but paddling up the quiet river through the morning mist was a truly special experience. Since we had the tour all to ourselves, we were able to paddle pretty much as we pleased, and I enjoyed hearing some fun facts about mangroves along the way. By the way, for both tours, we received all the photos taken by the guide after the tour was over.
The mangrove tour was what I was most looking forward to on this trip. We were a bit flustered when the boat to Uehara was canceled due to the weather, but during the tour, we were able to venture deep into the mangroves, and the people in our group were so fun—I really enjoyed myself. Since we had some extra time due to the return boat schedule—and we’d originally planned only the mangrove canoeing—I’d like to thank you for letting me join the Yufu Island tour on the spur of the moment. Thank you to both tour guides, Kokko-san and Matt-chan, for your kind and entertaining guidance. If I ever have the chance to visit Iriomote Island again, I’d love to stay overnight and enjoy even more of what the island has to offer.
